A nearly full moon is rising as we head into the final night at sea of our voyage to St. Augustine Florida. We just left Charleston, SC a few hours ago..... In many ways this trip, which was supposed to be a short jaunt down the coast, has been an epic little voyage.
This morning at a Paris Boat Show press conference, solo sailor Bruce Schwab announced his initiative to lead a campaign for an American entry in the 2008 Vendee Globe.
| Special announcement planned for Dec 6, at the Paris Boat Show:
Bruce will be calling in to a press conference at the City of Les Sables' "Salon de Nautique" at the Paris Boat Show, direct from OceanPlanet via Iridium satellite phone. |
It is Monday evening, and I am sitting aboard the boat at North Cove Marina, Manhattan Island, New York City. The last time OceanPlanet was here was September 15, 2002, at the start of our first around the world race, the 2002/2003 Around Alone.
Acura Key West Race Week (Jan 16-20): Still room, but filling fast. OceanPlanet is now being measured for IRC, since most of the other big boats that are entering prefer this.
If you are like me, you are enthralled with the current edition of the biennial Transat Jacque Vabre (TJV). This years race (doublehanded from Le Havre, France to Salvador, Brazil) has been underway since last Saturday…
By Saturday afternoon, I will be off to France with the Maine International Trade Commission (MITC). This trip comes at a very busy time for me....as we are preparing Ocean Planet for our mid-November Leg 1 voyage to Florida
One of the most rewarding parts of racing the Vendee Globe was the opportunity to promote French-American relations. Of course it was in our own small way, but I'll never forget the hundreds (thousands?) of schoolkids on the pontoon to greet me and Ocean Planet. I get goosebumps just thinking about it!
Sailing with a guest crew of enthusiastic supporters, everyone had great time this weekend at the 3rd annual Shipyard Cup Regatta based in Boothbay, Maine.
Hot off the press, there are couple of great shots of OP at the start of the Monhegan Race...
Well, nearly all of the Open 60's that are currently racing (and the 50's for that matter) will soon be gathering in Le Havre, France for the start of the Transat Jacque Vabre on November 5 & 6.
All three of the top U.S. Open Class racing boats were entered in last weekend's annual Monhegan Island Race, the highlight ocean race of the Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing Association (GMORA).
As you may have noticed, I've been
Ocean Planet arrived home to the U.S. greeted by a crowd of young and old...
Ocean Planet has sailed about 30,000 miles since she was last in the USA. Our voyage from the Azores started with several days of nice weather, complete with our porpoise friends...
Lying in our wake is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, and also one of the warmest welcomes that I have had in my long long voyages around the planet...
As we plod along through a nearly windless zone, near the center of a forming mild low pressure system, I'm thankful that we can now use the motor to take a shortcut to better wind...
On May 7, we had one heck of a party on the beach at Les Sables d'Olonne, along with over 50,000 spectators and the other Vendee skippers...
It was starting feel like forever since I last saw our good ship Ocean Planet, but once I stepped back aboard here in Les Sables d'Olonne late last night...
So you missed my TOS (Totally Offshore Seminar) and Vendee Globe presention in Portland, Oregon, (last Thursday and Friday)?...
Hi everyone. You haven't heard much from me lately, but a lot has been going on behind the scenes for the future of Ocean Planet and myself...
I'm still reeling from a fantastic time in Portland, Maine. Check out this interview with Maine Public Radio's Barbara Cariddi...
Anyone that says the U.S.A. doesn't follow shorthanded ocean racing should have hung out with me the last few days in Portland, Maine. I am a bit dizzy from all the hullabooloo, but will try to remember it all...
The most gratifying thing for me about the Vendee Globe has been seeing the faces of the kids who have followed Ocean Planet around the world...
