Great people:
These days it's a tough time for fundraising,
however Chewonki is very near to their goals in their current 60-Day Challenge (only
15 days left!). I thought I'd put in a plug for these great folks
and the programs they offer. Pitch in if you can!
Great sailors:
Have you been following the Vendee Globe? Michel Desjoyeaux
has become the first person to twice win this epic race. He did it in
amazing fashion, having to restart 40 hours after the initial start (he had to
return to port and fix some mechanical issues)....then gradually catching and
passing the entire fleet to win by a sizable margin. He seems almost
superhuman in the way he nonchalantly overcomes technical difficulties that
bring others to a halt, all the while sailing 1-2 knots faster than anyone
else. Amazing.
Young British woman Sam Davies is closing in on Les
Sables for a hard-fought 3rd place finish. She has become a media
sensation, no doubt greatly pleasing her title sponsor Roxy. I heard her
doing a live interview on NPR last week! Unfortunately, they made no
mention of U.S. sailor Rich Wilson who is slogging away in 9th, 3800 miles from
the finish. Oh well, he has other things to worry about. Best of luck to
all the remaining racers for a safe finish...19 of the original 30 starters have
had to drop out! It's dangerous out there.
OceanPlanet will have some visitors in Antigua this
week, however I'll be staying Stateside until April. Have to keep working
to pay the bills.
Don't forget about Chewonki...and also remember
all the great kids that have learned from being on OceanPlanet. It
would be great to get more kids out on OP again
someday... ;-)
