Caribbean Run 2008
As of 9am ET, we have 215 nautical miles to go to the northwest corner of Bermuda. Then there will be a few hours of the usual checking in and customs routine at St. George's Harbour.
After relaxing a bit we will be heading around the island to Hamilton Harbour and the Royal Bermuda YC. OP will be berthed there for a few days, and I'll be doing a fundraiser show for the RBYC's Junior Sailing program on the night of Nov 4th.
We have been taking it very easy, no reason to push hard. The first day & first night were very rough as the strong depression that moved over New England on Tuesday was still in effect. A few times we slowed way down, sailing with only a triple-reefed mainsail. Now we are broad reaching wiht a double-reefed main and working jib, at an easy 11-13kts. Now and then OP insists on riding a wave and takes off at 15-16kts, even though we don't have much sail up!
All three of the crew (Dana Sibilla from Portland, Oregon; Julie Lucchesi from Sausalito, CA; and myself) took a while to get our sea legs. I hardly felt like the same guy who sailed whole Vendee Globe without getting seasick! But we're all much better now and enjoying the nice offwind sailing.
Looking forward to a bike ride in Bermuda, and seeing a few old friends there.
