Recession? Not here. Check out all the
dinghies at the AYCM...this is maybe 1/4 of them:
If I didn't have the fan going here at
OP's nav station, it would be even hotter than the 90F showing on the
digital barometer. On deck it is great however, with the insistent
Atlantic trade winds providing welcome relief. The nights and mornings are
at the perfect temperature for the Classic Week festivities which kicked off
last night.
Yesterday was last day of doublehanded training
for guest Mike Taggett of El Paso, Texas. It was great to work with
Mike, an extremely talented and innovative entrepreneur/inventor. People
like him come up with the fun ideas that move things forward and make
the world better. His company Henry Works produces the "Human Dynamo" health club
& workout machine that generates electric power for the facility as the
club members work out. Now THAT makes sense! He was a quick study
and we got in some fun sailing.
Classic Week sailing started today (Thursday) with
the single-handed race. No, they would not let me race this Open 60 even
though the hull is (well, mostly) wood.... However, my old 30sq
Meter "Rumbleseat" (now "Diva") is being raced by current owner and famous
Caribbean sailor Robin Tattersall. Robin was born the same year that Diva
was originally launched...1930, and he still singlehands!! He'll
probably win, too. You do the math, do you think you'll still be racing solo
when you're his age?

The display of yachts here is simply stunning,
with the sheer magnitude of some of the largest sailing yachts on
earth, and for the amusing diversity and vast array of different
designs. Compare the might J-Boat "Ranger" and the exotic "Stealth" with
the whimsical "Veracity":

Stealth:
Veracity...note the sewing machine on the
foredeck:
Looks like I'll be racing with Robin on Diva for
the first two races of the regatta, then continuing with the work on OP.
There is a lot to do to prepare for the Run to Maine in May! Boats...the
work never ends... |
